DFOS brand pov
MAY 26TH, 2026

This doc lays out the current thinking on the DFOS brand and story. This is how DFOS is oriented, how it talks about itself.
TAGLINE
BUILD YOUR OWN INTERNET
Not a metaphor. The actual thing. A private layer of the internet, yours, with the people you choose, built the way you want it.
HOW IT'S BUILT
-
PRIVATE BY DEFAULT
-
DESIGNED AND TENDED BY YOU
-
A PLACE NOT A FEED
-
PROTOCOLS YOU CAN TRUST
-
A HOME FOR REAL WORK
WHAT WE DON'T DO
DFOS does not run advertising. DFOS does not sell user data. DFOS does not train AI on your work. DFOS does not publish user counts. DFOS does not index your work for search. DFOS does not partner with surveillance vendors.
These are not policies. They are the design.
VIBE: Medieval tech
Medieval — guild, monastery, codex, illumination, woodcut, tarot, bestiary, almanac, charter, vigil. Slow, hand-made, durable, ritualized, occult-adjacent, ceremonial.
Tech — protocol, infrastructure, encryption, distribution, software, network. Real engineering foundation.
The two halves are not in tension. The medieval is how the work feels. The tech is how the work runs.
TONE: Scout not pundit
We look with the curiosity of someone surveying new ground. We don't post like we have figured it out. We are interested in what we are protecting, not in being recognized for protecting it. We make things, and the things speak.
We don't do aspirational lifestyle aesthetics. We don't do founder-as-personality. We don't do earnest utopias. We don't do growth-as-virtue.
How to say it
If someone asks what DFOS is, any of these is true:
- "It's a place where I'm running a small private corner of the internet with people I trust."
- "It's software that thinks of itself as a place, not a feed."
- "It's like a group chat built the way one actually works — nothing public, no algorithm, no ads."
- "It's the internet rebuilt for the people on it, not the people watching it."
Use whichever lands. Say it your own way. The story is yours to tell.
LITMUS TEST
When making something for DFOS, ask:
-
Does this sharpen our worldview or soften it?
-
Could someone without a worldview also have made this?
-
Does it treat DFOS as a product or as a place?
-
Does this reinforce what we don't do?
-
Does it feel like DFOS or the internet we left?

Some of what you could make in your space
A confessional. An almanac entry. A sigil for your members. A vigil. A reading group around a Canon text. A ritual that marks the start or end of something. A record of a meeting written like a charter. A woodcut for your space.
How we would like to work together
We would like DFOS's story to be told three ways:
- The stories of people who use DFOS and how they use it. Testimonials, tours, space documentaries.
- The reasons why DFOS exists. The original dark forest theory. The story of the adversarial web and the platform status quo.
- What DFOS does. The product and what it enables.
We see these stories as not being only told or represented by us, but by everyone in this space together. We want to make templates, formats, and open invitations and ways to participate that we can all tell this shared story and lift each other's voices up together.
