NCE.DFOS week 05

Sup yall, and welcome to your weekly overview of all things NCE and DFOS. As always, so much is happening! Here's what's going on this week.

The big topic: DFOS takes stronger shape

This month is going to mark a big leap forward for DFOS. A lot of major updates and functions are coming at the same moment that we're reckoning with how to make DFOS uniquely itself.

I wrote a long post this morning (first an internal metablog within our squad) that lays out some reflections on where we are and where things are going: towards more differentiated, unique spaces that are less a firehose/template and more of a bespoke experience. Take a look at the post. Would love your thoughts.

At the same time, this week and next are going to see some of the biggest adjustments to our product so far. More on that in a dedicated post later this week.

The other big topic: A-Corp bill officially filed in Colorado

The big news of the week: the first Artist Company Act has been officially filed in Colorado. A year ago I was nervously rehearsing a TED talk about a strange new idea. Now it's real legislation. A giant step for everyone in this community and everyone it will eventually serve. More details coming very soon on what the law actually does in layperson terms.

Week 04 highlights

• We launched Chorus. A new channel that lets us collectively tweet anything that gets 5 or more upvotes. Our Dark Forest and Metalabel feeds are now all our collective voice. Most upvoted post so far: this gem from Edgar.
• NCE episode 13: Forward Not Back
• Lena's member map went live: 173 members mapped across 88 locations and 28 countries. Biggest clusters: NYC, LA, London, Berlin, Toronto. 18 upvotes, 21 comments. The most engaged post of the week.
• Ryan Weberling wrote Over-subscribed, under-contexted. a really beautiful meditation on context collapse and what's at stake when we talk about "oversubscription." Directly responding to the NCE podcast and connecting it to museums, magazines, and what makes a space worth being in. Highly recommend.
• Great question about IRL-online hybrid communities and DFOS
• Justice's post on curation and gatekeeping sparked a 10-comment conversation. Robert built on it with a post about the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati as a model for DFOS spaces — artists in their own studios, garage doors up, collaborating throughout the week. Chell imagined DFOS as a brutalist building. The spatial metaphors keep getting richer.
• Danielle launched new Art Circuits channel for art world talk
• Dhan's intro — Feed the Forest, Starve the Algorithm — captured the energy of why many of us are here. "I'd rather have 50 genuine caring believers gather in a private space than follow the social norm of forced paid engagement."

Week 05 headlines

• Brandon shipping an enormous release — DFOS 0.20.0. Highlights include:
• Post moderation (admins can hide posts with reasons)
• Announcements (broadcast any post to all members)
• Three-tier permissions system (owner / admin / member replacing the old flat binary),
• Quote-reply from text selection (select text → comment → auto-tag — 15 comments on that one) plus rebuilt comment section, link previews, and a redesigned members page

• Yancey will be in Colorado for A-Corp meetings.
