NCE.DFOS Week 11: The Precipice

There’s a line that says sometimes a year happens in a week. This was the case for DFOS and A-Corps last week, with big steps forward for both projects. I’ll let Brandon do a full runthrough, but here’s where things stand.

The new DFOS

Last week I made oblique references to ways that DFOS is evolving. This week, after lots of work by Brandon and Ilya, our team has gotten to experience the new world in action. And it is awesome.

The first part of the update is already live: making search and bookmarks universal functions, not ones confined to individual spaces. Doing this meant reorganizing the sidebar, which is live now. Soon DMs will also become global, and you’ll be able to read through all active threads across spaces in one spot.

Coming next week is the change we’re most excited about: the ability to build out and design your own DFOS space. It looks like this:

Soon spaces will start with a single app of a groupchat. Then, spacerunners will be able to simply and intuitively add other apps and capabilities they need, organizing them however they want (including in folders). The OS part of our vision is finally coming to pass.

Along with this are other important features we’ve been working on in the background, including email notifications, improvements to the DFOS protocol, and treasury. Our goal is to be able to test this with existing spaces, helping them transition, next week, with a full cutover to the new experience by the end of the month. As always, we’ll be seeking your input and feedback on how we get there. Excited!

A-Corps in Colorado

The other big piece of news from last week: the A-Corp law faced its first vote, as it was heard in committee in the Colorado Senate. Ten people testified about the bill — nine for, one opposed. At the end, the five senators — both Republicans and Democrats — voted on whether the bill should take the next step in the legislative process. By a 5-0 margin, the vote was yes.

This was a huge step for our A-Corp work, and a clear signal that this is a project earning support across the political spectrum. Many more steps to come, but this was a moment worth celebrating.

TED this week

My own internet access will be more sporadic this week, as I’m attending the TED conference in Vancouver, where I gave the first A-Corp talk last year. I’m here to try to build on our momentum and gather more resources and financial support for our work. We’re so excited about what we’re cooking, and have never been more hungry for this new world we’re building together to come to fruition.
