Six-week DFOS experiment: The Forest of Arts & Letters (WIP) 🌲
FEBRUARY 26TH, 2026

Hi everyone! 👋 I am currently starting a dfos experiment which'll run for six weeks. Joining is free but during the six weeks, if it cannot prove its worth by eventually tithing a total of $25 from 25 different people at $1 per person, then it'll shut down.
The dfos is called The Forest of Arts & Letters (FOAL). In my dream of dreams, it will become a pantheon to writing, a monument to the human spirit for creativity and wonder. Specifically, FOAL is organized into two subsets of members:
- WRITERS
- FANS
WRITERS are people who have their own daily writing practice and serious about producing output every single day. Maybe it's a blog, novel, short story, or poetry. It can be any thing in written format. Each writer in FOAL will receive their own channel which only they may post to. If you are a writer, you will be expected to post to your channel at least once every single day. (I will be keeping track on a public tracker page!!) Fans may reply on your threads to give feedback/comment. But only writers can start new threads in their channels.
FANS are everyone who love to follow and engage with work but don't have a daily writing practice. They're welcome to wander around the rest of FOAL with full write-access which will be populated with basically all the writing stuff on my hard drive plus anything else anyone else wants to contribute. My favorite short stories, author interviews, book excerpts, etc. All our shared communal items will be put into #the-library.
Additionally, if we can gather enough participants, there will be a Cohort #2 of Maggie Appleton's Echo and Narcissus Writing Club that will cost similar to what she charged. (The reason it costs money at all is to ensure Cohort #2 attracts only committed people as there's "homework" each week that will require participants to study their favorite writers for 1-2 hours and do written assignments.)
Note: any revenue generated by FOAL (monthly $1 dues or money collected for peer learning series) will 100% go to the dfos group treasury, transparent for all to see. That money will all go to the space and be used only for the space. (eg. I imagine a future where the FOAL Treasury funds group membership accounts to The Atlantic, New Yorker, etc.)
Again, this is an experiment. If you're interested, please reply to this post and I'll DM you a single-use join link. To begin with, FOAL is not public; I am just DM'ing people invite links who are intrigued and then they may invite up to five other folks. The idea is to not just blindly attract people, but attract the right people. If you are a writer with a daily writing practice and looking for fellow writers to hold you accountable, this may interest you. Personally, I'm currently writing a novel and will be posting an excerpt of my fiction every single day in my #w-robertland channel. If you wish to join, please reply on this thread and indicate if you'd like to join as a "WRITER" or a "FAN".
In short, I am not interested in just recreating another Discord server. I am interested in new patterns and potential economic models of creating and creative multiplayer. I am really hoping this experiment will succeed but there's only one way to find out. 🌲
